Problem:
Software testing required running induction heaters to test code
Faulty code could damage the heaters, causing costly downtime
Solution:
Create a 600V, 20kHz PCB that simulates induction heater behaviour for testing
Design Requirements:
Run on 600V power source
20kHz switching capacity using IGBTs (Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors)
Design Process:
Designed electrical schematic and circuit board in Altium Designer
Sourced electrical components on DigiKey
Performed heat dissipation calculations
Soldered on capacitors, diodes, transistors, and connectors
This project was an amazing opportunity for me to expand my experience into the world of electrical design. It gave me valuable insight into the intersections between design in both electrical and mechanical engineering, particularly in areas such as heat dissipation, component sizing, and integrated system design.
